(Patch file photo/Neal McNamara) SEATTLE, WA — Whether you’re on foot, horseback, in a kayak, taking photos, riding a bike, or in wheelchair, National Trails Day has something for you
National Trails Day was established by the American Hiking Society as way to advocate for, preserve, and celebrate the natural environment — and groups across Washington have planned events for Saturday to do just that There are more than two dozen hikes, trail parties, and (very long) bike rides happening from Montesano to Spokane
One of the main events in the region will be held at the South Seattle College Arboretum Ken Workman, a Duwamish Tribal Council member and descendant of Chief Seattle, will lead a hike through the Duwamish Greenbelt along the eastern edge of West Seattle During the hike, Workman will talk about the history of the Duwamish people in Puget Sound and the trails they forged
And, two quick reminders: If you can’t attend an event, all Washington State Parks are free to enter on Saturday You can also take King County Metro’s Trailhead Direct shuttle to some of the more popular hikes along the I-90 corridor, and the shuttle has stops in Tukwila, Renton, Seattle, Bellevue, and Issaquah
